Each leader has his own leadership style, which of course varies from one to another. Each leadership style has its own advantages and disadvantages for organizations, companies or institutions.

1. Democratic Leadership

Democratic leadership is a leader who, before making a decision, takes into account the inputs received from the people he leads. The people who are led can voice their opinions freely. With the input provided, leaders can see problems from different angles, so they can identify problems and solve real problems. In addition, by listening to input from the people they lead, problem solving is felt as a joint effort thereby strengthening teamwork between the leader and the people he leads.

2. Authoritarian Leadership

This type of authoritarian leadership is the opposite of democratic leadership. Leaders with this style are absolute leaders. This leadership style can be seen from the way a leader makes decisions, without thinking about the people affected by the decisions taken. In addition, the freedom of opinion of those who are led is very limited, almost non-existent, usually only relying on fear or a strong disciplinary process. It’s rare for this kind of leadership to work in a company today. Generally this kind of leadership can be found in military agencies, where orders from superiors are absolute things that must be obeyed. This does not mean that officers with high ranks can do whatever they want, but in the military world, compliance with applicable orders and SOPs can impact the safety of members in carrying out their operations.

3. Delegative Leadership (Laissez-Faire)

Delegative leadership is a leadership style in which a leader gives authority to the team he leads in completing their duties and responsibilities. Although this leadership style can increase trust and cooperation between team members and their leaders, supervision is needed so that too much freedom does not occur. This way of leading can generally be found in start-up companies that are still developing and are still building a work culture that they feel is in accordance with the vision and mission they want to build.

4. Strategic Leadership

The strategic leadership style places itself between the task or goal that must be achieved and the opportunity to develop from the task given. Leaders like this will try to balance and ensure that everyone’s working conditions remain conducive and stable.
